Neptune’s Baptism, also known as Maritime or Naval Baptism, is a cherished tradition at the Maritime School of Portorož, celebrated since the school’s founding. This symbolic initiation of first-year students, under the watchful eye of Neptune, the sea god, has evolved over the years, yet its essence remains intact. Senior students, dressed as pirates, lead the event with one portraying Neptune, while the freshmen, donned in coffee bags, represent “slaves.” The lively procession, often accompanied by a band, winds its way from the Maritime School of Portorož to Piran, sometimes by foot or by boat, depending on Neptune’s favor.
Upon reaching Piran, the freshmen pledge their loyalty to Neptune, vowing to be good disciples and eternal worshipers. In the past, novices would drink a cup of sea water, but today, they are ceremonially tossed into the sea by Neptune’s “old sea wolves.” This time-honored event has become a significant part of Piran’s maritime history and a fascinating tourist attraction, showcasing the region’s deep maritime roots. Join us in witnessing one of the oldest continuous traditions in the country and experience the unique maritime culture of Piran.
